Kathleen Doody began creating lanterns in 1982 while living in Kyoto, Japan. Since that time, her lanterns and lamps have been part of theatre productions, installations and parades on Toronto Island, at Harbourfront, Toronto City Hall, First Night, Fallsview Casino and for the CBC.
She was a founding member of Shadowland Theatre Company and and worked with the group for ten years creating large scale outdoor theatre productions with strong community involvement. For 23 years she organized a fire parade on Ward’s Island, Toronto. There were workshops leading up to the event where people could make their own lanterns to parade, along with hundreds of others, through the community to the beach. The lantern bearers were accompanied by stilt-walkers, fire spinners and drummers.
Under the company name Hotaru: Lanterns by Design Kathleen makes lanterns and lamps for homes and offices. These may be commissioned, site-specific pieces, or ordered from the models shown on the site.
