Kathleen Doody began creating lanterns in 1982 while living in Kyoto, Japan. Since that time, her lanterns and lamps have been part of theatre productions, installations and parades on Toronto Island; in Listowel, Ireland; Mount Holly, NC and at Harbourfront, Toronto City Hall and First Night in Toronto; at Fallsview Casino, and for the CBC.


She was a founding member of Shadowland Theatre Company and and worked with the group for ten years creating large scale outdoor theatre productions with strong community involvement. For 23 years she organized a fire parade on Ward’s Island, Toronto with community lantern workshops leading up to the event. 


Recently, she has run workshops in Ireland and Mount Holly, NC, teaching lantern-making techniques for local parades.


Under the company name Hotaru: Lanterns by Design Kathleen makes lanterns and lamps for homes and offices. These may be commissioned, site-specific pieces, or ordered from the models shown on the site.
