LANTERNS

Frames of the lanterns are constructed from dogwood, willow and apple branches because of their availability, colour, and flexibility. These are covered with Japanese, Korean or Thai handmade papers. The paper is coated with diluted white glue to make it taut and to add to its translucency.

The joints are drilled and copper wired, or lashed with waxed linen thread.

Some models are built with a paper mulch-covered wire screen, sometimes with a hand-beaten copper roof.

All of the lanterns are lit by a votive candle in a glass holder, securely anchored inside the lantern.
